Oct. 24th Conference Round Up

The 24th Conference on Saturday fulfilled its stated purpose of deciding on a single date of statewide action.

March 4th, 2010 - California Education will have a day of mass action. Strikes, walkouts, speak outs, occupations, sit ins, teach ins - mass dissent.

With March 4th in mind we'll continue our efforts at BCC to deepen and broaden the movement to stop privatization of the public education system and establish what is our right: an education system where anyone who wants to go to school can go to school, regardless of race, income and ability.

November 7th is the Teach in at BCC. It will be a day of teaching each other and networking. Please RSVP for this event. Also be sure to check for the "upcoming events" panel to keep up with actions happening around the bay area with our sister schools.

Education is a right! Not a privilege!

October 24th Statewide Conference!

October 24 Mobilizing Conference to Save Public Education

We have the power to stop the catastrophic budget cuts, fee hikes, and layoffs — but to save public education in California requires coordinating our actions on a state-wide level.

We invite all UC, CSU, CC, and K-12 students, workers, teachers, and their organizations across the state to participate in and collectively build the October 24 Mobilizing Conference to Save Public Education. The all-day conference will take place at UC Berkeley (contact us for more logistics).

The purpose of this conference is both simple and extremely urgent: to democratically decide on a state-wide action plan capable of winning this struggle, which will define the future of public education in this state, particularly for the working-class and communities of color.

Why UC Berkeley? On September 24, over 5,000 people massively protested and effectively paralyzed the UCB campus, as part of the UC-wide walkout. A mass General Assembly of over 400 individuals and dozens of organizations met that night and collectively decided to issue this call.

We ask all organizations and individuals in the state who want to save public education to endorse this open conference and help us collectively build it.

  • Save public education!
  • No budget cuts, fee hikes, or layoffs!
  • For state-wide student, worker, and faculty solidarity!

Please visit www.savecapubliceducation.org to endorse this conference and to receive more details.

The Speak Out

What happened at Berkeley last week, with 5000 people showing up to show their opposition to the budget cuts could be the beginning of a movement. It is our job to extend that movement as far as possible. And we must start with extending it to BCC. So, we encourage everyone to get involved.

Here's where to begin:

This is an update about this week. Come to the meeting this Thursday to help organize and build for the Speak Out on October 8th.
The Meeting is Thursday, 10/1 at 12:15 in room 54.
Attached is a flyer for the Speak out on October 8.

Stacks of printed Flyers will be available all week in the atrium. Spread them to all your classes

Budget Cuts Rally

People!

This is yet another big week for us. Tomorrow (Monday) we will be meeting in room 313 to discuss plans for our budget cut displays and speak out taking place October 1st. If you know anyone affected by the cuts, and they might want to speak out against them, let us know! The meeting tomorrow is going to be all about that.

Then on Thursday, as most of you know, is the big rally and UC-wide walk-out at Cal. We will be meeting at 11:30am (sharp!) in front of BCC, then walking up to Sproul Plaza on campus. If you have a red "no cuts to education shirt", sport it! If you don't, buy one for only $5 on Thursday so we can properly represent. I understand many of you may have classes, if you can try to explain to your teachers the importance of this event and missing some/all of class. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices in order for real change to happen, I know you all understand.
There should be flyers around for this all week, tell the people in your classes, friends, family, EVERYONE! Let's make this a big deal. This is our time to fight back!

I look forward to seeing you all there!

District 9

Thanks everyone who showed up to watch (or not watch) District 9 last night. In case you weren't able to make it, UA theaters played a very dirty trick on us and changed the times of the show the day of, leaving us movieless and a quite bummed. So instead, we just got fro-yo and hung out for a bit. Shame on you, United Artists!

So maybe we'll plan on seeing another movie? We'll discuss it at the next meeting. Ciao!

The Busy Week of 9/14

Hi Everyone,

Boy, do we have a busy week!
As some of you know, this Tuesday and Wednesday the ASBCC is hosting a Club Rush Day in the atrium. The Global Studies Club is going to have a table set up, and I encourage everyone to join us in trying to get more BCC students involved with us. So far we are planning on selling t-shirts, having fliers with some of our upcoming events listed and a "who we are" type flier, and globe style candies. If you have any ideas about cool things we can do to get people interested, just let us know!

On Thursday we will have our meeting as usual, we will be discussing the issue of race in America. This will be a precursor to our weekend event when we will be watching the movie District 9. We will be watching the movie at UA on Shattuck probably at 7:45, but more details to be announced. Also, a possiblity of hanging out after.
So, there you go, a ton of opportunity to check out the Global Studies Club this week! Hope to see you at some point!

Meeting Recap - Thursday 9/3

Today we watched "The Story of Stuff" with Annie Leonard. An informative animation about the stuff we consume, where it comes from, and what happens to it. It also goes into the history of consumerism and the popularization of disposable goods as a strategy introduced by economists to keep markets constantly stimulated. You can watch it by clicking here.

Next week we'll be planning some events for this semester, so put on your thinking caps, brainstorm, and we'll see you next week! Same bat time, same bat channel. (rm. 54 12:15 - 1:15)

Today's Meeting

Hey Everybody,

The first meeting was a great start. It was refreshing to hear so many ideas about the current state of affairs and the collective notion that something can be done about them. Budget cuts across California have affected us all in a myriad of ways - education, healthcare and other vital social programs are more of human rights than just a way to close a financial gap that can be fixed by other means. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again next Thursday and hearing more ideas.

Also here is Jen's E - Mail from tonight in case you missed it. It lists some important upcoming dates including tomorrows event.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for coming to the meeting today, it was great to hear all of your comments!

Because we were quasi-kicked out of the room today, I just wanted to send you all some quick info about upcoming events/ items of interest:

This Friday (tomorrow) there is the discussion and presentation about the Carpenters' Wildcat Strike and the Bluecross Strike. I believe you all received a flier, this should be very informative and relevant to what is happening today with BART and NUMMI workers. Doors open at 6:30; starts at 7:00. Because the door is self-locking someone will be waiting outside to hold the door so please be on time/ 5 minutes early or so. Bonus: There are going to be cookies! :-)

This Sunday there is a showing of the play "The Farm" (based on Orwel's Animal Farm) at John Hinkel Park at 4pm. This event is free (donations accepted). You can find more info at shotgunplayers.org ... the park is located at Southhampton, between San Diego Rd and Somerset Pl in Berkeley. We can meet there if people want to, otherwise it's an interesting thing to do on a Sunday.

Lastly, the movie District 9 is out. It is about an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on earth who suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. So, yes, very sci-fi, but I think it will address a lot of race/class issues we face in America today. It would be great if people wanted to organize a time/day to watch this together.

Also, for next week, if anyone is able to flier before our next meeting that would be great. If you want to flier with someone, I will be there Monday and Wednesday from 1130-1230, Marc will be there Wed 12-1, and Todd will be there Tuesday 12-1. Otherwise we can coordinate copies of fliers for you if you want to do it at a different time.

Thanks for your time!
Jen
