October 29th, 2011: Teach-In and Townhall

We Won't Pay For Their Crisis!

At School: Public schools are being closed, teachers laid off, classrooms overcrowded and college and university fees raised, while programs and enrollments are cut. Community Colleges, UCs and CSUs will turn away hundreds of thousands this year. Over 50% of the K-12 budget has been cut in the last three years!

At Work: Nearly 20% of working people are unemployed, with much higher rates for young people and minority communities. Wages are falling, benefits being cut, and attacks on workers and unions increasing as people are doing more work for less pay.

At Home: One million homes were repossessed last year, with over a million more expected in 2011. Vital services like healthcare, public transit, programs for children, the elderly and the disabled are being destroyed, leaving the worst off with even less. Currently in the US one in six people are living in poverty.

At The Top: The very rich are doing better than ever. Last year banks and corporations made their largest profits in recorded history - over $1.68 trillion. California, the 8th largest economy in the world, has 88 billionaires with a total estimated wealth of $245 billion. Politicians have chosen to spend trillions of our tax dollars on wars & bailing out banks and big corporations while cutting public services.

Oct. 24th Conference Round Up

The 24th Conference on Saturday fulfilled its stated purpose of deciding on a single date of statewide action.

March 4th, 2010 - California Education will have a day of mass action. Strikes, walkouts, speak outs, occupations, sit ins, teach ins - mass dissent.

With March 4th in mind we'll continue our efforts at BCC to deepen and broaden the movement to stop privatization of the public education system and establish what is our right: an education system where anyone who wants to go to school can go to school, regardless of race, income and ability.

November 7th is the Teach in at BCC. It will be a day of teaching each other and networking. Please RSVP for this event. Also be sure to check for the "upcoming events" panel to keep up with actions happening around the bay area with our sister schools.

Education is a right! Not a privilege!

October 24th Statewide Conference!

October 24 Mobilizing Conference to Save Public Education

We have the power to stop the catastrophic budget cuts, fee hikes, and layoffs — but to save public education in California requires coordinating our actions on a state-wide level.

We invite all UC, CSU, CC, and K-12 students, workers, teachers, and their organizations across the state to participate in and collectively build the October 24 Mobilizing Conference to Save Public Education. The all-day conference will take place at UC Berkeley (contact us for more logistics).

The purpose of this conference is both simple and extremely urgent: to democratically decide on a state-wide action plan capable of winning this struggle, which will define the future of public education in this state, particularly for the working-class and communities of color.

Why UC Berkeley? On September 24, over 5,000 people massively protested and effectively paralyzed the UCB campus, as part of the UC-wide walkout. A mass General Assembly of over 400 individuals and dozens of organizations met that night and collectively decided to issue this call.

We ask all organizations and individuals in the state who want to save public education to endorse this open conference and help us collectively build it.

  • Save public education!
  • No budget cuts, fee hikes, or layoffs!
  • For state-wide student, worker, and faculty solidarity!

Please visit www.savecapubliceducation.org to endorse this conference and to receive more details.
